The Day I Chose Silence

There are days when the world feels unbearably loud. Not just in sound, but in expectations, opinions, and the constant pressure to respond, to react, to prove something. Even within me, there’s noise—thoughts racing, emotions clashing, words forming before they are even needed. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with it all.

Today, I chose silence.

Not because I had nothing to say, but because I realized I had been saying too much—defending myself, explaining myself, trying to be understood by everyone. Somewhere along the way, I started measuring my worth by how well I could respond, how quickly I could justify, how clearly I could be seen.

But in the stillness, a question surfaced:

Who am I really trying to please?

article-body-image

Galatians 1:10 gently confronted my heart. If I am still seeking the approval of man, can I truly call myself a servant of Christ? That question didn’t condemn me—it revealed me. It showed me how subtle the desire for approval can be, how it disguises itself as responsibility, as communication, even as kindness.

Silence became my surrender.

Instead of rushing to speak, I paused. Instead of filling every gap, I allowed space. And in that space, something unexpected happened—God’s voice, not loud or overwhelming, but steady and clear, began to surface above the noise I had grown used to.

I realized that I don’t always need to be heard to have value. I don’t always need to explain to be understood. Sometimes, obedience looks like restraint. Sometimes, faith looks like trusting God to speak on your behalf, even when you remain quiet.

Silence is uncomfortable. It exposes what we try to cover with words. It reveals the insecurities we try to manage through control. But it also creates room—for peace, for clarity, for God to move in ways we cannot orchestrate.

Today, I learned that silence is not weakness. It is strength under control. It is choosing God over self, truth over reaction, surrender over striving.

And maybe, just maybe, in choosing silence, I am finally learning how to listen.
